Last night, Ava and I made salt dough ornaments to hang on our mantle as well as for gift tags. They are so easy to make and a great kid-friendly craft!
Here’s how to make them if you’re looking for something fun to do with your family:
1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup cold water
Blend all three ingredients in a mixing bowl until the dough forms into a ball.
Knead until dough becomes soft and pliable.
Roll dough onto lightly floured surface – approx. 1/8″ thick.
Cut out your shapes (this is where we wrote our words onto the dough) and use a straw to make a hole to thread your ornament.
Set shapes onto cookie sheet (we lined ours with parchment paper).
Bake for 2 hours at 220°F.
Let cool before painting.
For gift tags, we wrote on the back of the ornament with a fine tip marker. Works perfectly!
Happy ornament making!

Ahhh, these are amazing! You are so talented. These would make great Christmas gifts too. Do you colour them before baking?
These are so beautiful…I don’t think I’ve ever seen salt dough look better!! Just posted about on Craftgossip!
Melissa – these are gorgeous !! I love these – you are so creative. Keira and I will have to try these , she loves crafts and baking. Thank you , Thank you :)
I found this post on pinterest last night, and decided to make them for a craft day today. I’m so excited! I have everything I needed here at my house already, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they turn out!
That’s great! I hope they turned out well for you!
This is our first attempt at making them, but yes, I’ve read that they can last a very long time!
I just love the colours of these! Pinks, silver and white. They are super pretty :)
I featured them on my blog too.
These are beautiful as is, but I wonder if a person could add a small amount of food coloring to the mix to change it up for other occasions?
These are lovely!! I am also a dough artist looking for others to hang out with! Love your creations!
Beautiful! Did you make the wire tree also?
thank you, sherry! the wire tree is from my sister (i’m not sure where she purchased it, sorry)!
What kind of paint did you use on these? They turned out so cute!
hi jessica – thank you! i used acrylic craft paint.
